BIOGRAPHY A native of Duxbury, MA, Kevin Hubbard began playing the guitar at age 18, dividing his energies among rock, jazz and classical styles. His formal training has included private lessons with a former student of Julian Bream, Hugh Geoghegan; archguitar pioneer Peter Blanchette; jazz guitarists David Paulson and John Damian; and award-winning composer and jazz guitarist Whitman Brown. During the late nineties, Kevin began to focus on the Spanish-style classical guitar, studying with Boston-area guitarist John Muratore, and attending an Eliot Fisk-hosted masterclass in Granada, Spain. In the spring of 2002, Kevin received a Bachelor of Arts degree in music (magna cum laude) from the University of Massachusetts, where he studied with highly acclaimed acoustic guitarist Peter Janson. In April of 2003, Kevin released his debut CD, entitled Aspirations. The recording, which features the music of 14 composers (including Kevin, who composed the title track), has received airplay throughout the USA and Canada, was featured on WBZ-Boston's Jordan Rich Show, and received a very favorable review in the March 2005 issue of 20th Century Guitar magazine. In January of 2006, Kevin released his second CD, a reissue of a 1981 recording, entitled Avenues. The disc features Kevin's original jazz and rock compositions performed on electric guitar with ensemble. Kevin's most recent CD, a January 2008 release entitled Catnip, showcases a wide range of Kevin's talents as a guitarist and composer. The recording also serves as a complement to Kevin's latest endeavor, performing across North America presenting his new concert program entitled Classical Guitar with a Taste of Jazz. The show includes classical pieces from all eras, jazz standards, folk songs, and Kevin's originals, which combine classical with other styles such as jazz, blues, rock, and folk. Apart from music, Kevin's other accomplishments include creating a best-selling line of Boston-scene artworks, co-authoring a book about ice hockey with renowned author Stan Fischler, and winning the 1996 World Table Hockey Championship. |
